Weight Loss Surgery is very proud to have been designated a "Center of Excellence" (COE) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Cooperation. This highly prized designation is based on their program components, excellent outcomes, and safety, as well as a site visit to validate the program's data. They are St. Vincent's only COE bariatric surgeons. The great significance of this honor is evident by its endorsement by Medicare. Medicare patients can only be operated on by COE surgeons. Dr. Schmitt and Dr. Miles have performed over 3000 weight loss surgeries on seriously overweight patients from Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and across Alabama. In fact, patients from as far away as Iowa and England have sought out their expertise. The comprehensive bariatric program they developed at St. Vincent's East in Birmingham includes a highly trained team of doctors, nurses, nutritionists and other specialists and have served as a model for dozens of new programs across the nation. Dr. Miles and Dr. Schmitt are passionate about bariatric surgery and treat every patient as an individual. They do not offer a "one operation fits all" program but use the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic gastric bypass to help their patients reach their weight loss goals. The surgeons at Alabama Weight Loss Surgery can use both the Lap Band and the Realize Band and pioneered their use in Alabama. Dr. Miles performed the first Lap Band surgery in Alabama in June 2002 and Dr. Schmitt performed the first Realize Band in the state in May 2008.
