Dr. Miles has been a surgeon for 17 years and has been performing laparoscopic surgery for 11 years. Operating as a general surgeon at St. Vincent's East in Birmingham, Alabama since 1990, he now serves as President of the Medical Staff.

In early 2001 his interest in bariatric surgery peaked after reading an article suggesting bariatric surgery could be considered a surgical treatment or cure for diabetes. Further research on bariatric surgery prompted him to begin performing the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass in mid-2001.

Dr. Miles and his wife, Anita, have 3 young children. His favorite pasttimes include fishing, coaching the kid's soccer teams and FOOTBALL (University of Tennessee and Ole Miss).
