One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB)
One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB), also known as Mini Gastric Bypass, is an advanced minimally invasive bariatric procedure that combines restriction and mild malabsorption to help patients achieve significant, long-lasting weight loss while requiring only one intestinal connection. Many patients lose approximately 60-70% of their excess body weight over the first 18–24 months after surgery while maintaining excellent long-term results.
During surgery, your surgeon creates a long, narrow stomach pouch that limits the amount of food you can comfortably eat. The pouch is then connected to a loop of the small intestine, allowing food to bypass the first portion of the digestive tract. This reduces calorie absorption while also producing beneficial hormonal changes that decrease hunger, increase fullness, and improve blood sugar control.
OAGB may be an excellent option for patients who have a higher BMI (>35) with obesity-related medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea or have regained weight after a previous restrictive bariatric procedure. Like all bariatric procedures, OAGB carries potential risks-most commonly bile reflux, nutritional deficiencies, and ulcers at the intestinal connection site.
Every patient is unique. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your medical history, weight-loss goals, and determine whether OAGB is the best operation for you.
